Saint John's Escape Community of Kibera (JECK) Micro-enterprise project
Although child sponsorship was our first program, and has been very
successful, we realized that education is a long-term poverty alleviation
strategy. For that reason, we felt it was necessary to help impoverished
families generate income, while their children were receiving an education.
In 2003, we began working with the Saint Johns Escape Community of Kibera.
They are a group of 35 women living in Kibera, Nairobi, the largest slum in
Africa. JECK women currently make beautiful hand-sewn African dolls, baskets
and purses made from banana fiber. They are available for sale in the United
States. Contact the Microfinance Coordinator to receive a catalog of items
available for purchase at wwdmicrofinance@yahoo.com . You may also calendar
to fund upcoming events where JECK's fairly traded handicrafts are
available for sale.
They have also undertaken numerous projects in Kenya itself, sewing and
selling school uniforms, and making and selling candles at the local
markets. The JECK women have repeatedly come to us with successes, and
bigger and better plans for their group, their income, and Watoto wa Dunia.
They are now working towards moving out of Kibera into a much more pleasant
and healthy environment.
